Here at Unicool, we’re passionate about creating beautiful and durable hardcover books for your gaming table. But when we use terms like “book signatures” or “book block,” what do we really mean?

It seems that these terms can even sound confusing to native speakers, based on our conversations. ‘Book signature,’ for example, can easily create the image of someone’s distinctive autograph, not a group of bound pages! That’s exactly why we wanted to write this quick glossary / anatomy of a premium hardcover book—to demystify the key terms and give you a clear look at the craftsmanship inside your favorite books.

Key Hardcover Book Terms, Explained

1. Cover / Case

The cover (or case) is the rigid, protective outer shell of the book. It’s what gives a hardcover its distinctive weight and durability, protecting the pages within from wear and tear on the gaming table. There are usually 4 pages for the book cover (front and back).

2. Book Spine

The book spine is the central pillar of the book that connects the front and back covers. Its width is determined by the number of pages and the paper stock. This is prime real estate for the book’s title and your studio’s logo, ensuring visibility on a shelf.

3. Endpaper / Endsheet

The endpapers (or endsheets ) are the sturdy sheets of paper glued to the inside of the front and back cover. Often beautifully decorated, they are a hallmark of quality binding, seamlessly connecting the cover to the interior pages. The page count of endpapers is 8 pages.

4. Book Signatures

Signatures are small groups of pages that are folded, sewn together with thread, and then combined with other signatures to form the complete book block. Books bound with sewn signatures are exceptionally durable and lay flat easily—a critical feature during intense gameplay!

5. Book Block

The book block (or textblock) is the complete set of all the interior pages, gathered and bound together as a single unit. This is the true “book” before it is attached to its protective case.

A Crucial Note on Size: When we list the size of a book (for example, the most commonly seen US letter sized TTRPG hardcover book 8.5″ x 11″ or 216mm x 279mm), we are always referring to the trim size of the interior book block, not the external cover. This tells you the actual usable space on the page for rules, art, and lore. The cover will be slightly larger of course.

Why This Craftsmanship Matters for Gamers

For a tabletop gaming book, binding isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about functionality. A well-made hardcover with sewn signatures can withstand years of use—being frequently referenced, passed around the table, and tossed into bags for game night. It’s an investment in quality that enhances your gaming experience.

At Unicool, we prioritize these quality components in every book we make. We believe your tools of adventure should be built to last.
